Takedown and Storage, Included

The January part nobody wants. Cold, wet, and a ladder against an iced gutter. That is the part we handle without a separate invoice.

It is not an add-on

A lot of companies quote an install price and then quote takedown separately in December, once you have no real alternative. We do not, and we never have. Takedown is inside the number you approved before the lights went up.

That is worth checking on any quote you compare us against. If takedown is a separate line, the number you are comparing is not the number you will pay.

Where your display goes

After the season we take everything down, label it by job, and store it in our building. Nothing takes up your garage. Nothing gets crushed under a bin in the attic. Nothing has to be untangled next November because it was coiled in a hurry.

Storage is also why the second year is easier than the first. We already know your roofline, your bulb count, and how you like it lit, so rebooking is one phone call. If you want to add to the design for next season, that call is the time to say so. Returning customers also go on the calendar ahead of new ones.

Taken down the way it went up

Takedown is the half of the job where damage usually happens, because it is cold, the roof is slick, and the crew is motivated to be done. Same rules apply as on install day: roped to anchors on steep pitches, ladders footed properly, no shortcuts on a wet roof.

The display goes back in the box in the condition it will need to be in next season, which is the whole point of storing it.

What actually happens to your display

Everything comes off the house and goes into containers labelled with your job. Strands are coiled rather than bundled, because a strand that spent a year folded at a sharp angle is a strand with a break in it.

The containers go back to our building and stay there. Not a storage unit rented by the month, not the back of a trailer over the summer: a building we control, where the display is dry and nothing is stacked on top of it.

When we bring your job out of storage the following season, we already know the bulb count, the strand lengths and the run order. That is why year two goes faster than year one, and it is the practical reason rebooking is a phone call.

Why January is the part people underestimate

Takedown is where most of the damage in this industry happens. The roof is cold, often damp, and the crew is working through the least pleasant part of the job. Corners get cut and gutters get bent.

We run takedown on the same rules as install day. Roped in on steep pitches, ladders footed, wet roofs wait for a better day. A rescheduled takedown is a minor inconvenience; a damaged roof is not.

You do not need to be home, you do not need to remember to call us, and you do not need to get on a ladder. We contact you, we schedule it, and it is done.

What happens if you move, or want to stop

If you move inside our service area, the display moves with you, and we redesign it for the new roofline rather than trying to force the old layout onto a different house.

If you move out of the area or decide not to continue, call and tell us. The materials are ours, so there is nothing for you to dispose of and nothing sitting in your garage waiting to be dealt with.

There is no rolling contract to cancel. Each season is its own decision.

Why storage is worth more than it sounds

The obvious value is that your garage stays yours. The less obvious value is what storing your display does to next year's install.

Because your exact display is on our shelf, labelled, we know the strand lengths, the bulb count and the run order before we arrive. Year two is a shorter day than year one and it does not need a fresh design conversation.

It also means a mid-season repair uses matching materials. Nothing on your roof is a slightly different white than everything next to it, which is a small thing that becomes very visible at night.

Questions

Takedown & Storage questions

When does takedown happen?

After the season winds down, weather permitting. We schedule it and handle it. You do not need to chase us for it.

Do I pay anything for storage?

No. Storage at our facility is included in the original install price.

What if I move before next season?

Call Bill. The display is yours to have back, or we can talk about what fits the new house.

Do I need to be home for takedown?

No. We contact you to schedule it and then handle it. You do not need to be there and you do not need to move anything.

What if I want the lights up longer?

Tell us. Takedown is scheduled around the season and around you, and a later date is usually workable as long as we know.

Where exactly are my lights stored?

In our building, in containers labelled with your job. Not a rented unit and not the back of a trailer over the summer.
